Jesmonite, Jesin & Co.
The ultimate guide to water-based casting materials
Water-based casting materials like Jesmonite, Jesin, or Keraflott are the new alternative to concrete and plaster – lightweight, non-toxic, fast-drying, and perfect for decorative objects with a marble look or color gradients. At Farbfluss Atelier Hamburg, we work with Jesmonite AC100 and regularly offer workshops where you cast several of your own decorative objects.
What are water-based casting materials?
Behind terms like Jesmonite, Jesin, or Keraflott lies the same principle: a composite material made of mineral powder and a water-based binder that can be processed into a castable mass. After curing, lightweight, stable objects with a smooth, fine surface are created—depending on the pigmentation, in a concrete, marble, or pastel look.
What distinguishes them from classic concrete or epoxy resin:
- Odorless and water-based — no fumes, no protective equipment needed
- Lightweight — significantly lighter than real concrete
- Fast — most variants cure in 20–40 minutes
- Easy to color — pigments and oxide colors can be mixed in directly
- Beginner-friendly — no prior knowledge necessary
An overview of the most important products
Jesmonite AC100
The most widely used material for creative workshops. AC100 is an acrylic-gypsum composite suitable for fine surfaces and detailed shapes. It dries in 15–30 minutes, is very lightweight, and can be sanded and sealed well. At Farbfluss Atelier, we work with Jesmonite AC100. The slightly heavier sister product AC730 is cement-based and weather-resistant — ideal for outdoor objects, but less common for workshop use.
Jesin (by Mrs. Colorberry)
Jesin is a European alternative from the brand Mrs. Colorberry. Its composition and handling are very similar to Jesmonite AC100 — the main difference lies in a slightly longer processing time and a simplified mixing ratio (1:2). For beginners, this is often more practical. Jesin is readily available in Germany and widely used in the creative scene.
Keraflott (by HobbyFun)
Keraflott is a ceramic relief casting powder that mixes with normal water — no special liquid needed. It is cheaper than Jesmonite but has a slightly rougher surface and less flexibility in coloring. Ideal for simple shapes and budget-conscious projects.
What to consider when buying: All products have different mixing ratios and processing times — always read the manufacturer's instructions before first use. In the workshop, we will, of course, explain everything step by step.
What can you make with it?
The most popular projects in our workshops and the DIY scene:
- Decorative bowls & vases — with marble effect, color blocking, or pastel pigments
- Coasters & trays — timeless and individual
- Wall objects & reliefs — textured decor for the wall
- Jewelry — pendants and small objects with lots of color play
- Terrazzo look — sprinkle in colorful chips for a retro look
The beauty of it: through different shapes, pigments, and techniques (marbling, color blocking, terrazzo), unique objects are created every time — no two pieces look alike.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jesmonite toxic?
No. Jesmonite AC100 is water-based and non-toxic — which is why it is suitable for workshops without protective equipment.
What is the difference between Jesmonite AC100 and AC730?
AC100 is a lightweight acrylic-gypsum composite for interior objects with a fine surface. AC730 is cement-based, heavier, and weather-resistant — designed for outdoor applications.
Is Jesin the same as Jesmonite?
No, they are two different brands of the same type of material. Jesin is by Mrs. Colorberry, Jesmonite is a British brand. In handling and results, they are very similar.
How long does a cast object last?
Very long, if stored dry. Permanent water contact should be avoided — a clear coat sealer additionally protects the surface.
